You can’t have the most interesting Mazda MX-5
There’s bad news if you want a Mazda MX-5 in anything other than a shade or red, with Japan getting just six versions of these bright yellow roadsters.
The colour palette for the ND-generation Mazda MX-5 has been largely limited since it launched in 2015, with the brand’s iconic Soul Red Crystal one of the standout paints, amid a sea of white, silver/grey, black and dark blue options.
Wanting to add some brightness to the MX-5, Mazda has revealed Sunflower Yellow for its long-popular sports car in Japan, as a part of the new (deep breath) Mazda Roadster FSW Ver. 2 variant.
Not since the previous-generation NC MX-5 has the sports car been offered in yellow, and even then its Competition Yellow finish was far less bright than that which adorns this ND.
Available only in Japan, just six examples of the yellow MX-5 will be made, all of which are being finished off by Mazda’s Engineering and Technology division, as a part of a joint venture between four of the brand’s dealers in the country.
Painted in the Sunflower Yellow hue, the bright colour is joined on the exterior by a new black aero kit, consisting of a front splitter, side skirts, rear bumper fascia, as well as a lip spoiler.
Adding to the contrast are black wheels, badges, mirror caps and door handles.
The yellow treatment continues inside, where the door card trim and air vent rings have also been painted, as has the key fob.
As it's only available with a 1.5-litre engine, it's not based on the most potent versions of the MX-5, which are powered by a more powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder.
To decide who gets to own one of the six Mazda Roadster FSW Ver. 2s, a lottery will be run at the Mazda Fan Festa, held at Fuji Speedway in early October.
