Bathurst 1000 winner’s former V8 muscle car for sale… again

Former full-time Supercars driver and two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Will Davison last year sold his rare Ford Mustang DJR 40th Anniversary, and it hasn’t taken long for it to appear for sale again.

Now appearing via the Macquarie Auction Group, the 2022 Mustang is build number 17 of the 100 examples which were planned, reflecting Davison’s racing number when it was completed.

It was last year sold by the now-defunct Vellozzi Auctions for an undisclosed amount, during what turned out to be Davison’s final few months as a Dick Johnson Racing driver, having joined the longest-running Supercars team in 2021, exclusively competing with the #17.

Not much has changed about the car since it was last listed, with even the photos being copied from its previous auction.

It hasn’t driven much further either, still showing less than 350km on its odometer, with its V8 engine barely run in.

Built by Herrod Performance, the DJR 40th Anniversary received a 3.0-litre Whipple HP Gen X V supercharger bolted onto its 5.0-litre Coyote V8, resulting in power and torque rising from 339kW and 556Nm to 578kW and 810Nm.

To keep the Mustang reliable, Herrod carried out extra engine and transmission cooling work, while a unique exhaust was fitted to the modified vehicles.

In a bid to make it handle better, 20-inch diameter wheels were shod in wider Michelin tyres, and were teamed with revised springs, adjustable anti-roll bars and a Herrod-specific adaptive suspension tune.

Cosmetic changes included a front splitter and rear wing, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, retrimmed seats and unique DJR-themed interior appointments.

When new, the Mustang DJR 40th Anniversary cost about $130,000, which included the circa-$65,000 price of the Mustang GT donor car.

At the time of writing, bidding has reached just over $60,000, with the auction due to end on August 4 at 7:25pm.
