The world’s most iconic pony car is about to go hi-tech.
New reports all-but-confirm Ford is set to introduce a hybrid powertrain to the next-generation Mustang. Due in 2022, the new Mustang is expected to include an electric boost to go along with old-fashioned V8 power in order to meet ever-stricter emissions standards around the world.
According to sources and information sourced from a leaked US patent, Ford will add a pair of electric motors to drive the front wheels, supporting the V8 petrol engine that will drive the rear wheel; making the next Mustang all-wheel drive.
While a major departure for the blue oval staple, it’s part of a wider transition towards electrified vehicles with Ford aiming to have 18 hybrid models on sale by 2022. It’s also been forced by the tightening European emissions standards, with Ford set to keep the Mustang a global product; which means it’s likely safe for right-hand drive production too.
It’s also part of Ford’s strategy to expand the Mustang nameplate and leverage it to help its electrification plans, as it has done with the Mustang Mach-E fully-electric SUV. There is speculation that Ford could create a ‘family’ of Mustang models, all featuring some form of electrification – either hybrid or fully-electric.
Those who prefer pure petrol power can rest easy though, as it’s also expected the blue oval will continue to offer a conventional V8, rear-wheel drive Mustang, as well as possibly retaining the turbocharged, four-cylinder EcoBoost model as part of the 2022 line-up.
Expect the new ‘Stang to take some styling cues from the Mach-E but it will likely retain its classic silhouette as well as some of its now iconic ‘60s design elements.
The next-generation Mustang will launch in the US in 2022 which means it’s likely to reach Australian showrooms the following year.
