General Motors' Australian boss axed
General Motors local managing director, Jess Bala, has been axed by the company after three years in the role.
Australian automotive executive Jess Bala has been axed from her post as managing director of General Motors Australia and New Zealand, Torquecafe understands.
Bala has spent more 15 years with the US car giant, having worked her way up the ladder from starting out at Holden in 2009, moving to Detroit in 2013 to work directly for GM for a decade, and most recently returning to take the top job at GM ANZ in 2023.
Having taken over from Marc Ebolo, Bala was tasked with helping GM to regain market share, following the closure of Holden at the end of 2020.
As GM ANZ managing director, Bala inherited General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) as the car giant’s Australian distributor, with the Chevrolet Silverado and Corvette already sold here at the time.
Prior to her appointment as the Australian head of GM, Bala had been Cadillac’s product planning director in the US, overseeing the launch of the Lyriq electric SUV.
Her return to Australia led to the local re-launch of Cadillac in 2024, first with the Lyriq, and subsequently with the Optiq and Vistiq.
A troubled rollout of Cadillac in the market – which only sells luxury EVs – as well as other challenges around product choices are believed to have contributed to the decision.
Under her tenure, GMSV added the GMC brand to its local stable with the Yukon SUV, a decision which has also been questioned given the additional efforts needed to establish yet another nameplate, when the identical Chevrolet Tahoe is available overseas.
Also under Bala's control was the ACDelco brand of service centres and genuine GM parts.
Bala led GM as it started to navigate its new era in the Supercars Championship, after long-time homologation team Triple Eight defected to Ford for the 2026 season, resulting in Team 18 being the 'official' GM team.
The departure of Bala is not expected to impact the Supercars program, which is centred around the Chevrolet Camaro, a car which went out of production at the end of 2023.
"Following an accomplished two-decade career with General Motors, Managing Director of GM Australia and New Zealand, Jess Bala, has elected to depart the company," a GM spokesperson told Torquecafe.
"In her time as GM Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, Jess drove the growth of our world-class portfolio, including Cadillac EVs, Corvette and full-size trucks and SUVs.
"We thank Jess for her contribution to the business and wish her well in her future endeavours. Greg Rowe, currently Director of Sales and Operations, will serve as Acting Managing Director."
