General Motors president (and former Holden boss) Mark Reuss wants the all-new, next-generation Chevrolet Camaro to return to its origins, albeit with a twist.
The last petrol-powered Camaro coupe rolled off the production line in January but plans have been underway for years to reinvent the next model as an all-electric alternative. However, little is known about the details of the project, with questions still lingering whether it will be a four-door sedan or an SUV – with a coupe all-but ruled out due to modest sales numbers.

A report from US publication MotorTrend has given us some official details, with a story claiming Reuss has said it will be an affordable model, like the original Camaro coupe was intended to be. While there are no official quotes from Reuss in the story, MotorTrend claims he said the new electric Camaro will be priced from approximately US$35,000 when it reaches showrooms, putting it at the same price point as the new Equinox EV small SUV.

If that’s the case, that would position the revived Camaro as a direct rival (assuming it’s a sedan) to the Tesla Model 3, at least in terms of price, which would be a major statement from Chevrolet. Tesla has stolen a march on the established brands in the EV sales race, which is why Ford has applied the Mustang nameplate to its electric SUV and it makes sense for Chevrolet to do the same.
The company has already confirmed it will launch an all-electric version of its iconic Corvette sports car, so adding the Camaro would give GM a one-two punch with evocative SUVs.
