Classic Holden Monaro driver lucky to be alive after post-car meet crash

Queensland Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage or who witnessed a classic Holden Monaro crash to come forward, as it continues investigations into the shocking shunt.

Just after 8am on August 23, 2026, police and emergency services were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash on Kingsford Smith Drive in the Brisbane suburb of Eagle Farm.

A 1970 Holden Monaro had left the road and crashed into a tree on its driver’s side, intruding into the cabin, with its driver requiring extraction.

Images posted to Facebook via Wollondilly Shire Cars and Coffee, which is unrelated to the car the driver was leaving, show the driver’s door copped the brunt of the impact, which subsequently pushed the roof to almost the centre line of the car.

The Monaro itself was understood to be highly modified, powered by a 427ci (7.0-litre) ‘LSX’ V8 engine, with wide Centerline drag wheels at the back to attempt to put power to the ground.

According to Queensland Police, the sole occupant of the car was its 52-year-old male driver, who was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition.

While the incident was captured via CCTV cameras in low resolution (posted by Brisbane News), police have asked those with footage to make contact, as it reconstructs the incident.

Though still significant, the crash pales in comparison to that which destroyed an XY Ford Falcon in Sydney this year, which saw the classic sedan split in four.

Miraculously, neither the Falcon’s driver or passenger were seriously injured, with both men treated at the scene for minor injuries, and both later taken to hospital in a stable condition.
