Mercedes-AMG teases new V8-powered convertible

Mercedes-AMG is well and truly back on the V8 train, and looks set to create one of the most unique versions of its popular G63 SUV.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz teased the return of the G-Class (or G-Wagen) Cabriolet, as it was undertaking testing in Austria at the time.

Now it’s one step closer to launching, with the brand division posting teaser images of the V8-powered G63 AMG with its soft-top, representing the first time it’s been offered in Cabriolet form.

“Jaw-dropping. Roof-folding. Unmistakably G-Class. Stay tuned for more,” it posted.

It’s expected the Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet won’t differ too much from the existing fixed-roof, hard-top version, which is popular thanks to its boxy looks and menacing sound.

In the existing G63 AMG, its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 produces 430kW and 850Nm, delivering its raucous sound through side-exit exhausts, while being able to accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than 4.5 seconds, thanks to its all-wheel drive system.

Though the Cabriolet will undoubtedly weigh more, it shouldn’t do too much harm to the G63’s performance stats, given the big SUV is rarely taken to the limit of its abilities.

Mercedes has yet to announce when the G-Wagen Cabriolet will launch, though it’s previously said it’ll be a “special edition”, which could mean a limited production run, and a high price tag.

In Australia, the standard G63 AMG retails for $372,327 plus on-road costs, significantly more than the less luxurious, turbo-diesel powered G450d, priced from $217,227 before on-roads.

It’s not yet known whether more than just the AMG variant of the G-Wagen will be available in Cabriolet form.
