Mercedes-AMG’s new V8 supercar caught on camera
The new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is currently undergoing testing, promising to be one of the brand’s most extreme cars yet.
Mercedes-AMG is gearing up for the launch of its new GT Black Series, with the twin-turbo V8 sports coupe spied testing ahead of an expected unveiling next year.
First announced in March, AMG says the new-generation model will be the “most extreme Black Series ever”, having previously served as the limited-run flagship of the first-generation GT, and now coming to bring the second-generation version to the race track.
In a video uploaded to YouTube by N Cars, the new GT Black Series was spotted testing with a handful of other Mercedes-Benz models in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain ranges – the same region where one GT63 was filmed burning to the ground.
Little has changed to when we first saw the prototype in camouflage earlier this year, though it has lost its racing-inspired fluoro yellow highlights for a simple black and white finish.
Though camouflage covers the details, the GT Black Series appears to get a GT3-inspired aerodynamics package which includes a swan-neck rear wing and side-exit exhausts, as well as multiple bonnet vents plus a front splitter with extra canards.
It’ll serve as the upon which the new AMG GT3 race vehicle will be homologated, and do battle with the likes of the Porsche 911, Ford Mustang GTD and the upcoming Toyota GR GT in showrooms as well as on the track.
AMG is still running the first-generation GT in its GT3 racing program, powered by a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8. This engine was never available in the first-gen GT road car, which instead had a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 heart.
It’s expected the new GT Black Series will finally move to a twin-turbo V8 engine, with Mercedes-Benz recently launching the M177 Evo, an updated version of the 4.0-litre, now with a flat-plane crankshaft.
Speaking with US publication MotorTrend in May, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said the M177 Evo will be offered in three distinct guises: “the Mercedes-Benz [version], the AMG [version], and the ‘go crazy’ AMG [version].”
Given the AMG version of the engine is understood to be powering the upcoming CLE-based ‘Mythos’ series vehicle, it is widely expected the “go crazy” version of the V8 will work its way into the upcoming AMG GT Black Series.
“At AMG, we develop vehicles to exceed expectations,” AMG CEO Michael Schiebe has said. “And that is exactly what the future Black Series and the new GT3 will do.”
