Australian racing legend makes foray into bikes of a different kind

1987 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner has launched GARDNER87 as his new e-bike brand, though it’s Yamaha - not Honda - which will power the limited-run collection.

Just 87 examples of the three bikes - the S3R Urban, X4 R Trail, and X4 R Gravity Pro - will be made, each powered by a Yamaha battery and drive unit, ranging from 75Nm to 85Nm.

The 2000 Bathurst 1000 pole-sitter and one-time ATCC round winner will lend his signature to a plaque on each Limited Edition model, which are influenced by his racing days.

“Launching G87 has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager racing through the streets of Wollongong,” Gardner said in a media release about the G87’s brand’s launch.

“This brand is attribute to everything I love about racing - freedom, adrenaline, and pushing the limits. I wanted to create something that felt powerful but accessible, something you can take from the city to the open road.”

More information on the e-bikes can be found on the GARDNER87 website. The Yamaha link may be unsurprising, given Wayne’s son Remy races in the World Superbike Championship for the Japanese marque.
