The Porsche 935 with the original

Porsche’s retro-inspired track-day weapon, the 935, will make its first Australian appearance at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

One of only two Aussie-owned examples of the limited edition machine will be on display at the German brand’s significant Albert Park presence. The 935 is based on the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport mechanically but on the surfaces has been styled to look like the iconic 935/78, otherwise known as ‘Moby Dick’ because of its so-called ‘whale tail’ rear end. Porsche has only made 77 examples of this new 935.

The new version mimics those looks, with long, sloped bonnet and wide rear end unlike the 911 it’s based on, but also adds a number of modern touches. The wing mirrors have been lifted directly from the Le Mans-spec 911 RSR GTE car and the LED taillights integrated into the rear wing are inspired by the 919 Hybrid LMP1 car.

Under the bonnet is a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six making 515kW of power. It’s paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that can be operated by steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. It also features a titanium exhaust, steel brakes and adjustable suspension for maximum tuning potential for track days.

The 935 will be displayed alongside a 911 GT2 RS Clubsport, a road-going GT2 RS and a 1978 935 original. All four cars will also participate in an on-track demonstration run on Sunday morning, prior to the grand prix.

The 911 GT2 RS Clubsport and road car will also be on the Albert Park layout throughout the weekend to take part in the annual ‘Speed Comparison’ against an ex-Minardi Formula 1 car. Former Porsche factory driver and Supercars regular, Alex Davison, will be behind the wheel of the Clubsport for the comparison.
