It’s unusual for a brand only 20 years old to introduce a retro model, but when it’s Sweden’s Koenigsegg and the retro model is a modern take on its iconic CC8S, it’s worth making an exception.
Known as the CC850, this new model is a “contemporary reimagination” of the CC8S, borrowing its looks but using the brand’s latest technology underneath. This includes the engine, which is a twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8 that makes a staggering 883kW of power (that’s 1185hp!) and 1385Nm of torque.
As impressive as the engine is, the transmission might be even more spectacular. That’s because thanks to Koenigsegg’s clever engineers, it’s both a nine-speed automatic and a six-speed manual at the same time. The company calls it ‘Engage Shift System’ (ESS) which allows for the driver to either choose if they want to use the clutch pedal and the gated manual shifter, or let the car do the work.
Like the gearbox, the car also manages to be two things at the same time. As well as celebrating the 20th anniversary of the car brand, it also marks the 50th birthday of the company’s founder, Christian von Koenigsegg. As such, it will be limited to just 50 examples.
“The CC850 is an homage to the single most meaningful car in Koenigsegg histroy,” explained von Kenigsegg. “The CC8S put us on the map and made us successful – and celebrating 20 years of production, alongside my 50th birthday, felt like the right time to reveal the CC850 to appreciate our roots.”
