NASCAR legend spends big on first Corvette C8

2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray.

The first Chevrolet Corvette C8 has sold for US$3m ($4.3m) at auction – and the new owner is no stranger to fast Chevys.

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick was the winning bidder for the Corvette VIN 001 and it will join his collection of other #1 built Corvettes, Camaros and other special Chevrolets. In 2016 Hendrick spent more than US$4m in a two-day spending spree that saw him nab VIN #1 of the 1955, ‘56 and ‘57 Corvettes as well as the first 2016 Camaro SS.

As a long-time Chevrolet dealer Hendrick has amassed a car collection of both road cars and significant NASCARs; having run the likes of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Terry Labonte to Cup titles.

His latest addition is yet to be built, but is set to go down the production line in the next few months. It will be a black-on-black Corvette C8 3LT “loaded with every available option” according to the auction house.

The good news is the money Hendrick spent won’t go to Chevrolet, instead it the entire amount will go to the Detroit Children’s Fund; a non-profit that invests in schools in Motor City.

“I am the number one Corvette junkie in the world,” Hendrick said. “Thanks to Chevrolet and Barrett-Jackson, because they always pick charities that are so good and help so many people.”

Holden has confirmed the Corvette C8 will be sold in Australia for the first time. It’s expected to be available in 2021 but the company is set to confirm timing and pricing, but stay tuned to Torquecafe.com and we’ll keep you informed as soon as information becomes available.
