The DeLorean name has returned but it’s nothing like the car made famous in the Back to the Future movie franchise.
Revealed online by the reborn DeLorean Motor Company, the new model is known as the Alpha5 and it’s an all-electric four-seat electric sports sedan. While it doesn’t have a mid-mounted petrol engine and angular body like the original DMC-12 the old and new models have one major element in common – gullwing doors.
COMING SOON: DeLorean’s comeback plans
Neilo Harris, DeLorean Motor Company vice president of the brand, explained the Alpha5 is designed to continue the legacy of the DMC-12 despite its differences.
“We have been given the opportunity to reimagine a brand that has meant so much to so many people from all corners of the globe for four decades,” Harris explained. “DeLorean has touched so many lives and set the stage for so many memories… We are all now witnessing a new chapter of this amazing story.”
Full specifications of the new model haven’t been confirmed yet but initial reports from the US – where the new DeLorean is based – suggest it will have 100kWh battery and will run 0-88mph (in a nod to Back to the Future) in 4.35 seconds.
Full details of the Alpha5 are expected to be revealed at a presentation on Tuesday (Australian time).
